1981-82
Season
In 1981-82, it was our 3rd season in the London Spartan League Premier Division, we finished in 6th position.
Local newspaper activity was good in these days and there was plenty to write about. Various snippets were :
Abbey have lost Ollie (Paul Holloway), gone to Hertford Town
Pierce has re-signed for the Abbey after training with Chingford and Hoddesdon
Reserves 3 Danson 1
16 year old bright prospect Andy Cope hits the bar.
Sammy Salomone and Larry Deverson are now at Hoddesdon Town.
11th September 1981
Dream Debut for young Andy Cope (16years old)
2nd October 1981
Paul Holloway scored the winner for Hertford Town against Chesham United on an impressive debut.
9th October 1981
Bryan Sherwood is also at Hoddesdon Town now.
6th November 1981
Bryan Sherwood re-joins the Abbey.
20th November 1981
Bidwell walks out on the Abbey
Reserve team Manager and his assistant, K Jones, both appointed this season walked out of a management meeting at the clubhouse on Tuesday night and resigned.
Bidwell was annoyed of being wrongly accused of setting up a move for Colin Winter to Cheshunt. Cheshunt Chairman Terry Prosser said "It was Bill Broomfield's idea!" "He felt that Winter was worthy of better football". Winter is expected to join them.
The committee told Bidwell that they were not happy over players not training which led to a disagreement on policy.
4th December 1981
Colin Winter has signed for Cheshunt
Tony Wilson drops a bombshell. He tells Billy Broomfield that he is leaving the Abbey. He is expected to re-join Hoddesdon Town.
12th December 1981
Martin Clements who started the season with the Abbey has re-joined Cheshunt
18th December 1981
Colin Winter included in the Cheshunt squad to play against Kingsbury Town in the FA Vase 2nd Round
Bill Broomfield has selection problems. John Hodges, out of action for a month with a broken toe is fit again and he has 3 new signings.
Alan Hagan has returned from Australia for 12 months. Former players Larry Deverson (Hoddesdon Town) and Mark Howard (Hertford Town) have re-signed.
1982
At the turn of the year Waltham Abbey were second in the table behind Fisher Athletic by 3 points.
8th January 1982
Salomone finally re-joins the Abbey
Nigel Archer has recovered from a knee cartilage operation. The team were just about to travel to Bracknell Town when a phone call told them that the game was off.
15th January 1982
Waltham Abbey have now not played for five weeks.
29th January 1982
Bill Broomfield has been appointed General manager. New first team manager is Mickey Jenkins (This needs citation)
12th February 1982
Winter re-joins the Abbey after one and a half games for Cheshunt.
Tony Wilson also returns after a spell with Hoddesdon Town, as does Bobby Landells who has been out of action for 18 months.
12th March 1982
Andy Hall transfers to Brimsdown Rovers.
Ronnie Smith scores Cheshunt Reserves after being transferred from the Abbey.
Waltham Abbey Reserves were late arriving at Wandsworth.
